Well done Tony :D

These are the four nicknames they used when writing articles for the expedition 'magazine' The South Polar Times. Interestingly Scott never used a nickname in the Times although you are right about the options you listed
One of those? Oh I'm sure I have one somewhere..

The "Titus" was a bit of a giveaway and I was pretty sure I remembered that was his nickname.

In my serch to confirm the names, I came across a website of Antarctic nicknames. I love the Internet!

Fun site, I must get in touch with them as I have a few antarctic books not in their list.

Well he's the earliest, but that's not it as Purcell, the next earliest is in the middle.

There is obviously a logical reason for the sequence . . . it's not the age they were when they died. I need to give this some thought. :?

I still can't find the reason for that sequence.. not nationality, not religion, not height, not year of birth, not year of death, not the order of instrument played, not the order of films based on their life... there must be something that logically puts them in that order

yes there is and (once you know what it is) it is easy to look up where Dowland fits

The reason for the sequence is readily available and easy to check on the internet unlike album track listings, especially the sort of 'classical hits' album that would have that lot on

It just needs a bit of lateral thinking ;)

Bugger, I thought I had it this time, since those are also names given to asteroids, but the order is not right!! (and dowland isn't there, I think). maybe I'm going too lateral here, I better get back on track asap
still it was fun to find out that in
1932 an asteroid was named 1815 Beethoven
1988 it was 4345 Rachmaninov
1931 it was 1814 bach
1986 it was 3784 chopin
1939 it was 1818 Brahms
1987 it was 4040 purcell
1988 it was 3910 liszt
no ravel
1989 it was 4579 puccini
1989 it was 4872 Grieg
and no dowland....
like, you learn something new every day..

okay, time to take a break, go home and have a lie down, me think

yeeeeah, I got it, I got it
Dowland goes right after chopin, because they are all names of craters on Mercury, in order of km
beethoven 643 km
rachmaninoff 290 km
bach 225 km
chopin 129 km
dowland 100 km
brahms 96 km
purcell 91 km
liszt 85 km
ravel 75 km
puccini 70 km
grieg 65 km

:D :D this must be right, it fits perfectly! thanks Mad, this was exciting :D I love this game :D
