I think you can get away with it if you have a weasel-word disclaimer - something like

All characters in this work, real or imaginary, bear no resemblance to or involvement in events that are happening now, have happenedin the past or could or are likely to happen in any multiverse of your choosing...

I think the disclaiimer must be the way to go.
Even though there are numerous examples of authors using real people and getting away with it, I get the impression that is only because the real people in question choose not to challenge them. Still looks like technically it could be libel, its just a matter of whether it is persued.

I'm not a lawyer but I don't think you can commit libel in a work of fiction because there is an understanding that what you are writting isn't true,

which I guess the disclaimer is there to support

I had a break for a month, then was deciding whether to continue or not. I gave myself to the end of September to make a decision. If I went for it I'd have to spend a lot of time on it. So I thoight I'd let fate decide. If anybody made a comment before the end of September I'd do it. Nobody did. So it's suspended until further notice.

Ok, notice revoked! I write. Just for the fun of it really. I wrote three short stories for my school to raise money for charity (sixteen of us took part) as part of a fun event that the school set up so they could build a new gym and pool. Just some simple stories. I won a prize for them though! But I donated it to the charity. *humbled* So, come on PC! If you write the next chapter, maybe I'll write something too. Will there be any more competitions? Maybe for short stories??
