So why drink beer then . Get the drain cleaner from under the sink , or a bottle of methylated spirits

And if you drink 15 pints and are still sober, what's the point in drinking beer? Why not drink tap water, or milk?

Years ago, when people talked about the future, they said that there'd be loads of machines doing all the menial tasks, so we humans could just kick back and relax, spending more time with friends and family, and improving our minds.

So what happened?

We have all these machines to do everything, but everybody seems to be working harder and harder.

Quite a lot of people are certainly spending a lot of their time playing with their smartphones so of course they have to work harder to get enough dosh to spend even more time on their phones...

Talking about the future, I've just bought two Stephen Baxter books from ebay.

Speaking of Baxter, I got The Long Earth a few days ago. BTW, did you know that he's written a Doctor Who novel coming out soon featuring the Second Doctor called The Wheel of Ice?

And Pooh, think about the perceptions of the future. Think, for example, about what would happen if everyone got jetpacks or flying cars. Think about current road fatalities, and how worse it would be if those cars were in mid-frakking air. Getting the screaming horrors is a sane response.

As for machines doing all our work, well, I think Scott Adams (of Dilbert fame) pointed out that every technological advance causes even more work and problems.
