I'm still quite new to Discworld, having only managed to get my hands on Hogfather, The Truth, and The Color of Magic. Damn my ignorance.

Right, because the Disc's gravity field is created by octiron deep in it's crust, and, as everyone knows, octiron can only exist in an area with a strong magical field.
