I actually used mine for an hour or so last night.

I find it a bit heavy, but I'm pretty sure that's down to the leather case, plus I think it would be easier to use sitting at a table/desk than lying in bed, as was the case with me.

The other thing is - make sure you've got a decent signal with 3G, or you'll be banjaxed for downloading anything.

I have been reading some posts about the leather cases causing problems with them, and no problem with the 3G as I have that on my phone when I'm at a convention in the States this year I will use the WIFI option to download some American books.

I'm going to wait until the backlog from Amazon has caught up with their orders I still waiting for my pre Xmas book order to be delivered.

I tried a sample with Kindle for pc apt it was Ok and the extra vat is only £4 so there is no rush at the moment.

Krister henriksson possibly wouldnt like being squashed in a parcel and posted to the uk, (especially if he gets sent through Heathrow cause he would get stuck in the snow. It was funny watching the chaos trying to clear the runways) and possibly it is against the law, but I promise to at least look into it.

So the best way to work out your kindle or anyother E-book is to go onto youtube and look at some of the demonstraitions people have posted, there are even games n stuff with secret codes, (my kids taught me that).

Main problem I've had is that it freezes when its not fully charged and goes to sleep, way to fix it is slide and hold the on off button for 30secs then release it. the light on the bottom should flash. If this dosn't work try the same thing but with the charger in.

Oh yeah the text to speach is funny,it's like Steven Hawkings reads bedtime stories.

I found the WiFi pretty damn slow at work (EC3) and each book took an age to download.

Then I thought I'd try downloading to my PC, and copying over. The ruddy thing went to my PC and automatically to the Kindle!!

When I left work, I took the Kindle with me, and when I woke it up whilst sitting on the platform at the tube station (overground, not underground!!) it got a decent signal, and all books downloaded in an instant!

Can't get a signal at home for love nor money, so the moral of this story is............ if you want to download books to your Amazon Kindle, spend a lot of time on trains!!

Maybe there are a lot of users in the vicinity using WIFI or try moving to different parts of the house to see what signal your getting as there are hot spots and cold due to wall positions I believe can affect it.

I got a Kindle for Christmas which actually arrived today. Could someone please tell me before I start replacing my paperback Discworld books with Kindle editions if the Kindle Store editions have properly formatted footnotes (if that is the right word)?

I hope you guys understand what I mean* and can provide an answer.

*Illiterate me is unsure if 'footnotes' is the right word to use, I hope this illustrates my point.

Thanks Tony for the welcome; it seems like you do a good job here. An alternative would be does anyone know if there is a return policy for Kindle Editions? I know that sounds kind of stupid but the Android OS App Market (refund available if app uninstalled within 15 mins) seems to make it work.

Probably the wrong place to ask that question but from the posts I've read so far you all seem like pretty knowledgeable guys.

My Dad recently downloaded a Kindle book by mistake, and he contacted Amazon who said there was a 7 day return window for all their books, as they fell under distance selling regulations.

He cancelled it and it disappeared from his Kindle within minutes.

So in theory, if you can read a book in less than a week, then you could read them all for free, although I suspect if you did it on a regular basis they might catch on . . .

Incidentley the Android app store apparently prevents this sort of fraud by limiting refunds to once per app. Which means sure you could pirate it once but you wouldn't be able to get any updates for it. I guess this wouldn't really work for books unless authors started publishing chapter by chapter.

I have not read any Trerry Pratchett books on my kindle as I've got them allready in paperback. I have read others with footnotes that work ok, just scroll down and over to the number (not * or other signs) a pointing finger comes up like on the net, press that and you come to the footnotes for that chapter, press back when your'e done.
Hope you understood that.

A big WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! done fall asleep with your kindle. Last night I was reading, fell asleep with my kindle beside me, woke up with a cracked screen. Kindles are fragile.

Right.

I've been giving my Kindle a good workout this past few days, and here are a few things I've learned.

There's a button to the righthand side of the spacebar, that looks a little like a bit moutain point and a little mountain point.

Press it. You then get into the options settings for making the print type bigger, and orientation of the books you want to read, ie portrait or landscape.

With regard to footnotes. I'm currently reading I Shall Wear Midnight.

The footnotes are numbered 1, 2, 3, etc.

At righthand side of the Kindle is an up/down left/right control panel.

Using the left/right, etc buttons, go to the numbered footnote, at which point the cursor should turn into the pointing hand symbol. Press the enter button on the controller (the square pad in the middle) and it will take you to the footnote.

To go back to the book, press the "back" button.

Not ideal, but better than nowt.
