My Upcoming Total Shoulder Replacement Operation

Postby swreader » Sat Sep 12, 2009 5:06 pm

I posted about this on another thread and I'm not sure how many people saw it. So, here's the current latest gen. on Tony's arrival & the shoulder surgery.

I had the epidural, went OK and my back is much better. People are supposed to have their blood sugars(diabetic) rise and gain weight after getting cortisone, but (as has happened before), my blood sugars are crashing in spite of lower doses, and I'm losing weight. If it runs true to form, it should stop fairly shortly, then perhaps turn around. This is a real nuisance, but not serious.

A week ago yesterday, the surgeon's office called, and said--when does Tony arrive? I said Friday night the 2nd of Oct. - so since they had a cancellation for October 23rd, the current schedule is:

Oct 2nd - Tony arrives (early evening)
Oct. 5th - Tony and I meet with the surgeon Dr. Butler to discuss which shoulder he's going to replace this time, and any and all things we are going to have to do to get ready for bringing me home the morning after the surgery. Will know then which hospital, what time, how long the surgery will last, etc., but I expect to be home on the 6th (assuming things go well). Of course the last time some doctor's office said that, I was in the hospital for four weeks, but I didn't have Tony to take care of me). And they say that with 3 weeks of physical therapy, I should be able to do waist level activities like write and drive!!!! You can be sure that I'll do them faithfully.

Don't know which shoulder he'll do first, since they both require total joint replacement, nor how fast he can do the second one. I'm hoping for the next time Tony comes over. He'll be here this trip until the end of the year, and currently plans to come back in April and stay til about June 2nd. But that could be adjusted.

I will try to lurk, and have Tony post occasionally for me--but I doubt I'll be posting very much for the next probably 9 months. Since typing causes pain, I'll save my posts in general for communicating with Tony.

So, here's the rest of the schedule:

October 23rd - Shoulder Replacement surgery -
Oct. 24th - Sharlene comes home-- Tony to stay til end of year.

All good thoughts, vibes, & prayers are gratefully requested and accepted. This is, of course, major surgery--and I'm not really a good candidate, but we don't have a choice. More later.

As I said previously, although I'd rather Sharlene didn't have to go through this at all, I'm very glad that I'll be there when she does so that I can look after her.

I know from past experience that knowing there are people out there sending good wishes, it really make a difference for the better. :D

I will miss your posts, Sharlene, and I'm sorry you have to go through dbl rotator cuff replacement.

But we will want to hear from you every day as soon as you can type.
