Danger: Social Media Can Be Dangerous

Postby Bouncy Castle » Wed Dec 18, 2013 11:26 am

A Taiwanese tourist had to be rescued after accidentally walking off a pier in the Australian city of Melbourne while checking her Facebook page.

The woman tumbled from St Kilda's pier into Port Phillip Bay late on Monday night.

Police were alerted to the incident by a witness and rescued her in a speedboat after about 20 minutes.

The woman, who apologised, was taken to hospital for observation but police said she was fine.

Senior Constable Dean Kelly of the water police said officers found her floating metres from the pier.

"She was still out in the water laying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn't swim," the Australian Broadcasting Corporation quoted him as saying.

"She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologised... she said 'I was checking my Facebook page on the phone and I've fallen in'."

Constable Kelly called on people to pay more attention when using social media around water.

Victoria police, meanwhile, said in a statement that there was no need for a lost property report because the woman "kept hold of her mobile phone throughout the entire ordeal".

The times I've seen people just walk straight into the road whilst tapping away at their phone. I'm surprised more people aren't killed or seriously injured.

I've come to expect someone to walk into me every time I go into town or shopping.
Why do people insist on walking around whilst having a phone conversation? They're lethal! AND they reckon they're safe to do the same when DRIVING A VEHICLE

Saw a bloke zooming up the road on a Boris Bike, one hand on bars, the other one texting.

Begs the question, why was the driver of the car filming it? Surely he was being irresponsible and putting people in danger too?

There was more than one person in the car - one assumes the passenger filmed it.

Depending on what country it was, and what side of the car the driver sits in!

I detest social media. But you don't need to be on it to do stupid and potentially fatal things involving mobile phones. A few weeks back or so, they had some article on Today Tonight on the dangers of drive-texting. I can't believe that people actually text while driving. :|

I can barely drive when driving sometimes so using a phone, eating or doing anything else including talking that isn't driving is a no-no for me...

As much as I'd love to blame facebook (and there is alot to blame them for) I've seen people walk into things while reading a paperback.

Well said Jan! People who try to text and drive are out of their minds. What a stupid way to die, or end up taking someone else's life.
