Loved Dave Allen!
I don't suppose that if he'd been alive today, he'd have been allowed to smoke and flick his ash on stage!Did he ever explain how he lost part of his finger?
Going to my school was an education in itself. Which is not to be confused with actually getting an education (Schultz)

The "real" story about the finger.

After Pope Paul 6th died there were graffiti saying "Dave Allen for Pope"
After Pope John Paul died (he lasted about a month) the graffiti changed to "Dave Allen for Pope this time"

He gave up the cigs and became an anti-smoking evangelist and changed his act to stand-up (as opposed to sitting on his bar stool) later in his career. The glass of whiskey was another illusion too; it was usually ginger ale!
Odd fact for the day coming up.....apparently it's still legal for a performer to smoke on stage as part of a theatrical production!

Its the same in Ireland . I went to see The Portrait of Dorian Gray in The Abbey Theatre in Dublin and they smoked pretty much the whole way through the performance. Seemingly it has to be approved though so a standup saying he needs to smoke will probably be refused here.

One of my best childhood memories is sitting on my mum's lap watching Dave Allen. Some of his stories & skits would scare me but I'd be laughing as well.

I know. Poor little birds. :( Those stinkers eventually knocked all three feeders down and just swiped what was left of the birdseed cakes.

Oh, and I learned something else! In the 1930's it was all the rage for gas stations to have "certified" clean bathrooms. The Phillips 66 chain actually had registered nurses driving around in cream colored cars with green fenders, wearing white military style uniforms, inspecting the bathrooms. Wish they were still doing it today!

No squirrels here but the jackdaws work in pairs........one holds the hanging feeder still while the other plunders the contents. Can't get a picture since I've got the feeders hanging under cover of trees to keep it safe for the little birds.
