Meerkats excepted, of course :D

I like cats. Never really figured out if I like dogs more. And recently I've discovered that foxes are very beautiful. I'll link one in the "Animals that are not cats or dogs" thread.

Here is my old diabetic boy, Squeaker, posing as a Christmastime table decoration in the hopes that gooshy food will be placed within easy reach.

I, too like cats; we always had a cat back when I lived with my parents, but over the years I have developed an allergy to them, so this thread allows my to get my cat fix with out the downside.

How do you find out if your cat is diabetic? Do I really want to know?

I had a wonderful tuxedo cat named Theoden who became diabetic at age 9. We finally had to put him down at age 18 because he developed epilepsy. You get suspicious of diabetes when a cat starts drinking and peeing A LOT. Then you do the same fasting glucose test that humans do. Then you give daily insulin injections under the scruff (yep, Theo loved getting his shot because he got a meal and cat treats at the same time). Monitor urine output and sugar with glucose dipsticks instead of trying to do ear-sticks for blood!

We don't do the sugar testing ourselves but we have him tested (blood & urine) at least once a year and adjust his insulin (aka: shooting juice) accordingly. He's around 14 years old now and getting 5 units twice a day.
