Well it was a live broadcast for Granada TV, they were probably expecting a recording of Coronation Street ;)

I'm listening to a 1938 production of Puccini's La Boheme starring Beniamino Gigli and Licia Albanese as Mimi. It's really a very good recording considering its age.
