I've been trying to learn shading techniques with my wood burner. Here's my first try - A Steampunk Fairy.

I'm not that good an artist to the general outline was copied from an picture. Getting light and dark out of the burning was a challenge.

Thanks Dotsie! There's generally a bit of smoke around, but none of my work has gone up in flames yet!

Cheers - I've done other stuff before, but its either been writing on wood, or straight forward silhouette stuff - like the cogs on this piece. This is my first proper try at a picture with shading and depth.

That is excellent, Chilli, especially if it your first attempt!

If you find your current job a bit boring or unfulfilling, maybe by getting a little more practice in (shouldn't take too much looking at that) you could start doing the wood-burning on a more commercial basis. Local scenes and local iconic buildings (a snap from a mobile phone or similar should provide an accurate template) can make good sales amongst local businesses (cafes, etc) and maybe your tourist shops might be willing to stock a few for a small commission.

I hate my job! or rather insurance as a whole industry But I don't think I can ever make enough money at making wooden stuff to pay the bills . I do like the idea though of doing some local scenes though. The Watercress Line (steam railway) is only a mile down the road - maybe some inspiration there??

However, my sister, and her partner do run a woody website (http://www.iwoodlovethat.co.uk ) and I do supply some stuff to them. It's only been up and running a few months, but it's gradually getting there. They also do craft markets round the Manchester area. She visits every month or 2 and I pass stuff I've made to her to pop on the website or sell on her stall.
