- actually that only gets you registration, you don't choose to be a physician (medical doctor) or surgeon until the end of those seven years. That's when your training to be either begins. Training to be a specialist depends upon what you do, but it's usually about another seven years - many surgeon friends of mine who became registered with me at the beginning of the century are still training and doing their exams (mind you, so will I be again soon).
