I think it's because there is a city called Durham. Most counties that have a city add "shire" to the name of the county - such as Gloucester in Gloucestershire, Hereford in Herefordshire, York in Yorkshire etc. Shire is an ancient name and Co. Durham is a relatively new county. So rather than calling it Durhamshire, they went with Co. Durham.

Most Irish don't say the County part either. Only English when referring to the place really.

Tony and Pip said it really..........and we're just bone idle about writing County out in full :whistle:
Seriously though. it is simply to distinguish the city of Durham from the rest of the county and vice versa....and please, feel free to visit us here, it's rather a nice area.
