As the topic of this thread says I will use this posting to introduce myself:
I am living in a village near Bonn and Cologne in Germany (okay, 30km to each, but it is easier to say "near" because nobody else would know this tiny village although you cannot simply walk across the street to arrive "the big city"). I am rather good in reading english, writing in english is a task in which I presumably still need practice, so feel free to correct me in terms of grammar and style - You write and learn.
I think the origin of my account may seem rather obvious. But "Roland" simply is my real first name and so every time in the Tiffany Aching books somebody (usually Tiffany) is shouting out "Roland!" I feel a urge to jump up and ask "what did I now again wrong" or even "It wasn't my fault!". - And this really isn't my fault, but Terrys.
Also, I like the chap and in some ways I can recognize myself in him.
So as I read in this forum and made the decision to sign it took not very long to invent this user name.
My history of reading DW novels is somewhat slow in the beginning and became very fast in the recent two years.
Reading books in english is something I am pracitising now for several years (after some translator in some novel had had the opinion the echidna would be a little dump and grey animal which lives on trees and is eating eucalyptus...). But eventually my first book in english, other than the books we was forced to read in the english courses at school, was "Thief of Time" (ToT), long before. A friend had it borrowed to me and I liked it, I liked the very refreshing ways about death having a granddaughter, of rule number one, of the fifth horseman who has left the groupe before they became famous.
But it took a number of years before I really get the love to the DW novels. Every now and then I found here and there a novel or one book including two of the novels, mostly with one of the death novels (but also Moving Pictures, also one of my first I have read). The first series I completed then was indeed the death series, and I have read it many many many times. Though, in the german translation version. This was years before I decided whenever possible to read the english original. When I actually began to read the novels chronologically I should have continued in this intention. But at this time I was in regard on discworld novels accostumated to the huffy-fluffy-cuty-style of translation every german discworld reader has been grown up with and seems to love it...
On my way through the (still german) novels I also came via Internet to L-space and Websites which has shown me how unsufficient to Terry this german translation really is (and how many avoidable errors has been made) and so from Carpe Jugulum on I am reading DW only in english, too. And then and at the moment again in english from the beginning. At the moment I am reading "Snuff" (the second time), the only book I haven't read yet is "Raising Steams"... but it is on my shelf and would be detained after "Snuff".
Okay, you can see above that I sometimes have a problem to make it short *cough* so if there occurs further questions - ask, I will answer... I think.
Though, one question I nevertheless want to ask:
Before my signing in I have read many threads in this forum about the novels and there is a nice forum called "discworld novels" with some very interesting discussion therein and I would presume that this might be the place to still discuss the novels. But also I have seen that there are other threads in this forum, often on other places, also about this novel or that, so I am a little bit confused were to write because I don't want to ask or mention things which already has been chewed through several times without adding new aspects (I know other forums at Internet and I know how annoying this may be, even if you give newbies the benefit of, well, being new...).
