I have never watched the televised version of American elections before the last time. I hadn't planned to watch it all the way through, but I found myself praying that Obama would win and watched riveted all night. How sad is that? But it was like watching a riveting whodunnit.

I'm still backing him. He surprised me this time around with some of his militaristic ideas but in other ways I reckon he's got it right. He'll get the vote of all people on low incomes who want decent medical care at least. How can anyone with any kind of a conscience oppose an idea that looks after poorer people? So much for 'repulican'. Have you ever looked up the definitions of republic and democracy? They are identical. Slightly different wording for each in my dictionary, but exactly the same meaning. Effectively rule 'by the people for the people' for both of them. So perhaps they should either change their names or shake hands and work together? Dang! That pig nearly took my head off!

What's ironic, Margi, is that the Democratic and Republican parties to today are nearly the opposite of how they started.

The original Democratic party was started by Jefferson (ironically, it was originally called the Democratic-Republican party), and through most of its history was adamantly libertarian in outlook, and its main base of support were southerners who didn't want the gummint to interfere with their way of life, including slavery.

The original Republican party was actually very liberal. It supported emancipation, greater federal control over states, and broadening of federal powers. In fact, other than Lincoln, its most liberal president was Theodore Roosevelt, whose anti-big-business, pro-government control, environmental protectionist policies would be considered socialist by today's Tea Partiers.

Well, my man Obama certainly redeemed himself in last night's debate. He decided to show up prepared and battle-ready.

Now, to be fair, Romney did a good job on his own, and scored some points, particularly about the jobs issue, which is one of Obama's weaknesses. But Obama didn't hold back. Adopting the Joe Biden playbook, he interrupted and often knocked Romney off guard, particularly when he caught Willard in an obvious gaffe, when Romney claimed that Obama was traveling around the country campaigning after the Libya embassy attack and waited 14 days before calling it a terrorist act, when in fact, Obama spoke to the nation at the White House the day after the attack and clearly called it an act of terror.

I couldn't stand to watch the debate itself, but it sounds like the Obama I voted for in 2008 was there. And while both of them made some "factual" errors about the other, Romney's were definitely more glaring. (eg. 14 days before the President called the Benghazi attack a terrorist activity.) Not only is that wrong factually, and given Romney's ability to know nothing about and alienate most of the countries he visited this summer, it takes real gall and lack of principle and humanity to try to make political capital out of lying about a tragedy such as that.

And anyone notice that Romney has significantly changed his stance about women (although the women in binders has apparently gone viral). The problem is that he says whatever he thinks will get him votes WITH THAT AUDIENCE--and who knows what he really believes. If he follows strict Mormon doctrine, women wouldn't do well under his "leadership."
