RIP Lonesome George - the last of his kind

Postby The Mad Collector » Mon Jun 25, 2012 7:44 am

Lonesome George has died in The Galapagos. He was the last of his subspecies of giant tortoise and became the symbol of the national park. I saw him (from a distance) 10 years ago so the picture isn't the greatest especially as this is a scan of a print.

One of those? Oh I'm sure I have one somewhere..

Sorry to hear that! :( It's always sad when a species gets instinct... truly awful!

So sad to hear a species has gone extinct.

Very sad too that apparantly they were delicious. I read that in the Science of Darwin, so it's Terry's fault I know that useless bit of information.

It's a sub-species so not entirely disastrous but still a shame - they did try and breed from him but apparently distant lady kissing cousins from other sub-species just didn't 'do it' for him... :shifty: I see the article speculates that there may still be some purebred individuals individuals in captivity (see wiki article) and there is one known half-breed so the bloodline may not be totally lost...

RIP George - your lot saw off the dinosaurs so you had a v.g. run

RIP George.

We lost our beloved Harriet in 2006.

The fascinating thing about Harriet was: Here was something living that Charles Darwin had handled ! She spent some sad times in cold cold England and they brought her to Australia to live in a warmer climate.

R.I.P. George. Blimey Del, I remember hearing about Harriet but didn't remember she was that old. Something to be said for living life in the slow lane eh?

RIP George.

RIP George :( Weird thing is I had a geography exam today and we had to talk about the Galapagos Islands... coincidence I suppose.

RIP Lonesome George. I saw a very undignified clip of them carting him away in a wheelbarrow. Head & legs hanging over the side. If only he coulda lifted his head up and said, 'I'm not dead. I'm getting better. I feel happy.'
