You can't take the risk where your family are concerned.
He willnae tak' a drink! I think he's deid! , on the other hand though A Midgie in yir hand is worth twa up yir kilt.

My mother in law died today, unexpectedly. I've just arranged for Mr Selkie and me to go down to be with his family. We won't get there till Tuesday evening. Right now, we're a bit numb and aren't sure what's happening. We don't know when we'll be home. My heart is breaking for him and his dad and sister.

I agree with what's been said, you cannot take risks with your family (if it was a large dog that was docile 95% of the the time but, without warning, a vicious brute the other 5% you wouldn't hesitate over doing what you have to do). At least the pony will be able to be ridden at his new home.
