IMAGES IN SIGNATURES

Postby Jason » Sat Jun 09, 2012 6:08 am

We have all become aware that some members of the message boards have very large signatures with lots of animated images in them.

While most of us have tolerated small animated images for some time, many of us find animated signatures distracting. Recently some users have decided that 4 or 5 large animated images make a good signature and this has caused annoyance for a number of members especially those using smaller screens such as phones and tablets where these signatures take up large areas of their screens or those using mobile data tariffs that have to pay to download all these animated images.

We have therefore taken the decision to ban the use of any images in signature files. There is a system setting which I will implement in a second that will not allow new signatures to be created with images in them.

If you currently have images in your signature files please edit them out using the User Control Panel.

If you cannot do it yourself or need help, please PM me.

Thanks,

Jason

Bet that'll make Del happy. It took her so long to do it too!

Are we still allowed to have words? :?

Are we still allowed to have links? :?

No problem with words or links, although, ideally a permanent link to another site would be better as your homepage link.

On reflection, this decision does seem to be a tad draconian. :?

If you buy a new car, you don't drive it at 30 mph all the time, do you?
No. You push it to the limits to see what it can do.

You have this shiny new forum and all Pip, Del and myself were doing was seeing what it was capable of.

For that, why should Jan, Spidey, Tiffany and Sjoerd suffer? :o
Because suffer they will if you ban their images on their sigs. :?

Why not allow each member one image? Then everyone will be happy. 8-)

Pip's cat, or Spidey's spiderman, or Jan's Dreamworlds, or Tiffany's dragon/egg are part and parcel of their character, that we've come to know and love.

(But what do I know. I'm just a troublemaker causing trouble again, aren't I? )

I'd have thought that one animation would be OK.

I'm going to miss pip's surprised cat signature!

No offense to anyone, but the surprised cat is the only one I'll miss. While they were just a distraction for me, I can imagine how frustrating it was to anyone who's connection was affected by it. We don't want people unable to read and participate here. So, thank you once again for making a difficult decision! :D

Swings and roundabouts etc - although on asp server forums you can put a maximum limit on image/animation file sizes in various locations including the sig box.

My forum's tiny in comparison so I can tailor it to suit the smaller membership, but I can see how it'd be irritating for people who're using mobiles to post. :? Plenty of other ways to put images in posts and more spontaneously as well so it's not really a biggie ;)

I don't like them. It's hard for me to tell whether it's a "post", or part of the "sig".

I completely agree with everybody. 8-)
If people posting images on their siggy is stopping people with phones using this forum, then ban them. 8-)

I'm only a simple bear with little brain, so can someone explain the following;

Can we put images on our posts? :?

Like this;

Image

Or is that not allowed? :?

Can we still put up youtube videos? :?

Is this a rule, or can it be totally ignored? :?

I can't be the only one not surprised by this. As soon as pooh and pip's sig war started I knew it was only a matter of time before Tony or Jason put the foot down.

Using phones to view this forum with, is only a recent development, so it isn't anyone's fault that it never occured to people that multiple posting would inconvenience anyone.

A good question concerning animated images in posts, though. YouTube shouldn't affect anyone, as no one has to click on the link, so is there now a quota for posting animated images?

As to multiple images just being annoying (for some people), it was obviously a game between pooh and pip, and would have blown intself out within a short space of time.
I quite agree that we don't want to stop people visiting us though, so having a quota of only one image seems fair to me.

I do like pooh's smug, self-satisfied animated image, though!

It's not just phones. I have no problems with bandwidth and my screen is big enough, I just find them annoying.
Thank you Jason! I have been wanting to bring the topic up, but didn't know how to put it without stomping on to too many toes.

I agree - surprised cat is an exception. Maybe Pip could use the non-animated version as his avatar: Image

In that case, can't we limit the size of photos that get posted? Some are HUGE! :o
