World No Tobacco Day

Postby Del » Thu May 31, 2012 11:10 am

So.......... May 31 is World No Tobacco Day.

Since I had run out of cigarettes last night before I went to bed I thought... no problem... lets give this a try.

This afternoon I picked the child up from cheerleader practice and went to the computer place to get the power thing for the laptop and the childs netbook with the assureance that the $75 model would do both then got told it wont and it will cost another $65 for one for the netbook...... assured the saleman (a very nice man) that perhaps I will come back tomorrow to forge a solution.

Went and brought a packet of cigarettes.

I may not have quit (which I need to do) but I figure this day is all about "awareness"

I am now aware of the following things:

a) Do not give up smoking until you have made secure arrangements for a place to bury the bodies.

b) Do not give up smoking until "Not being a complete IDIOT when driving in rain" is a driving licence requirement.

c) Do not give up smoking until I realise that people who annoy me do not deserve to be stabbed in the eyes with a really sharp stick even though it would make me feel really really good.

I have a list of about 50 or more.... but we shall leave it at that. Amazing what clarity my mind had while I was not smoking.

I could do it on the weekend, but there's no way i could do it during the week when i have to work. though, i do know of a number of places to get rid of bodies at work. and depending on who it is i may even have help.

But i couldn't do it ofcourse. love and tolerence and all that. yes, it does bite sometimes.

Having looked it up on the net........What a load of tosh.
If I wanted to give up, I would, but I don't.
No one is going to tell me I can't smoke, not until they make tobacco a banned substance, but as the government still, dispite people quiting in their hundreds, gets more tax revenue from tobacco related products than almost any other source, it won't happen in my lifetime.
Comes a budget & what does extra tax go on every time.

I don't smoke in my house, I have a sun lounge, or the front porch, I smoke rollies, I never smoke in cars or other peoples houses, I do smoke in the outdoors at car boot sales particularly, but then so are a lot of other people. My kids have seen me smoking, but it didn't make them want to.
I enjoy a ciggy.
Best wishes,
Tiff

I quit on the 18th of september last year in 4 days after 30 years and two packs a day. :happy-partydance:
Always knew it to be a filthy habit of course...

In all seriousness,i should have quit ages ago naturally.
Since i have quit i have saved about 10.80€ a day(which adds up pretty quick,that's 3942.-€ a year... )...
Got back a fair degree of taste and smell i very nearly forgot i even had...
Stopped starting each day with some Dirk Gently-style coughing...
Stopped feeling guilty about causing all the extra airpollution, filters and packagingswaste, subjecting my dog and others to secondhand smoke...
Stopped my clothes, house and car smelling like an ashtray(now i have stopped smoking,i share the disgust of others at this particular smell)...
Etc.,etc,...

I have been feeling better ever since, with more energy, time and money gained.
Thankfully i have not added any weight,i might even have lost some there too. :P

All in all i highly recommend anyone from stopping putting money in the pockets of unscrupulous people like the big tobacco-companies or perhaps worse, paying for a fair amount of the niceties of your local politicians( :angry-nono: ). ;)

Sincerely yours,

A ex-smoker.

Ps I do still vaporize something sometimes  ,but no more of the evil weed or combustion for me.

Everything you said Mycroft. When the time's right to quit it makes sense. No preaching or smugness but I feel better without a cigarette and about £3000 a year richer.

I used to smoke, and although Mr D knew he never said anything about it, and I never smoked in front of him. But then I realised that I didn't want to die of lung cancer in front of him either. So I stopped.

Smoking is never considerate when it comes to loved ones, wherever you do it. But then you all know that already, right? :P

I gave up five years ago this month, ably assisted by two weeks confined to a hospital bed with pneumonia* (amongst other things) and drugged up to the eyeballs (morphine being just a part of the cocktail I was fed with). By the time I was unhooked from all the tubes and even able to shuffle far enough to get outside (by now three weeks) for a cigarette, I didn't actually want one and have not had one since. :D

*I was unconscious for the first week so didn't even experience the 'joys' of nicotine withdrawal. This probably wasn't the best way to give up but it was effective!

Thats how I need to do it Penners. But I am so bad with morphine. I always have it noted on my hospital files "Do not give me morphine!" but they still have done in some cases because I am allergic to some other meds. I have these little green gremlins who rip my face off and eat it when I get morphine.

Look guys .. I didnt post this thread to be preachy. I am a long time smoker and need to give it up. Most of us who smoke know we will need to one day. I was just trying to joke around how bad a day it was without nicotine..... well.... you do realise I wasn't joking!

My honest and heartfelt congratulations to everyone who HAS given up. You deserve medals! I could have bought a damn house with the cigarettes I have smoked! Not to mention the damage it has done to my lungs (and it has). I am not afraid of lung cancer.... that kills you fast! Its the 100 other side effects that are nasty. Emphysema being top of my list. Smokers are usually the BEST informed about what smoking does.... gods! They have it drummed into them from every side and source every day.

Strange thing. I have worked in hospital related areas and seen heart lung surgeons who smoke, nurses who smoke, rehab specialists who work with ex-smokers who smoke.... but the ONE place that I worked where NOONE smoked?... a specialist group of eye surgeons. Noone in that place (over 100) smoked. After reordering the files for the patients I could see why. Smoking does massive damage to eyes.

But yanno.......... I still smoke. I am not a baby killer. I am considerate. The laws here are very tough too and the price is very high. I am astounded they still legally sell cigarettes when its a product that kills. I was less upset when my oldest tried drugs than I was when she smoked. I get really shitty when someone with avoidable diabetes lectures ME piously about smoking...... grrrrrrrrrr (drugs to give up smoking have JUST come on the NHS here; and you only get ONE go at it!!! If I had diabetes I could get a personal trainer among other things!!!) ..... but in the end..... live and let live (or die as may be the case).
Just keep swimming... just keep swimming.. just keep swimming....

Personally, I can't stand the stink of tobacco ... although, having said that, my grandfather used to smoke Old Holborn, and the smell of it brings back fond memories, of us rushing to the corner shop when we were about 11 years old, and buying an ounce of baccie for him, and then rushing back home again.

It was during one of those runs that I knew that I was going to run into a tree, which was situated halfway down the street. Sure enough, even though I kept as close to the fences as I could, the moment I approached that particular tree, I veered as in a semi- circle, away from the fences, and ran straight into it.
It drew me in like a magnet. and I was stunned and fell to the pavement afterwards.

Our lovely grandfather died of lung cancer, and the last time we saw him he coughed up a blackened piece of lung in front of us, and passed out.
He was taken to hospital and then died. We have never smoked, and have no wish to.

I have no objection to smokers, as it is their choice. The rule with my friends is that if I visit them, then I do so knowing that they smoke and it is their home and their rules, whereas if they visit me, then there is no smoking allowed inside my home.
Apart from that, my sister has shares in B.A.T., and they are doing very nicely, thank you!
