There were rumours about Savile even in the early 60s. I can recall he visited the town where i lived (in the mid-60s?) becaus his mother had been born there/lived there for a time or somesuch......any road.....and a family friend, who was a pro photographer, got to ride in the Savile Rolls-Royce as a perk for taking pics for the local paper. As Arthur was in his 50s and no looker I guess he was safe enough but remarks were quietly voiced to the effect that no sensible parent should allow their daughter to go in the car.
Savile was a sexual predator who must have chosen his victims carefully, swerving away if he met with any resistance and using his celebrity status as a lure. Whether we understand it or not, it's a fact that celebrity + money = power, and Savile's general lack of attractiveness would be easily overlooked by a certain type of youngster. He would not need to threaten most of them not to tell since his status in their eyes would be such that he could get away with just telling them they would not be believed.
The man was a sick mess psychologically. He worshipped his mother (and quite possibly detested her too) and never entered a relationship with anyone. Worth watching the Louis Theroux documantary about Savile if you can bear it. I watched when it was first shown and it made my skin crawl
