I knitted (and remember I don't knit) my oldest a cute hat like that. And a little jumper (cardigan). I think there is something sweet about fine hand knitted baby clothes (as pretty and trendy and easy to look after the modern knits are).

Worth the time you have to take to hand wash them. Though oh dear, our poor mothers. Not fun to hand wash ALL the time with a small baby to tend for as well when that was all you had to keep a baby warm.

We get it easy these days huh? Disposable nappies, machine washable and clothes dryer-able clothes.
