LOL. I should think it's nice and cool, what with some of the temperatures you're getting over there!

Just for the record, that's not Blue. It was attached to an article about the temps out west and the dog cooling off. :D It's actually gotten weirdly chilly here these last couple of days.

I talked to the kids about the dog again and suggested that,as they are so keen on having a dog, I would offer to help provide the food it needs,so how about them providing the money needed for tax, insurance and vet bills by finding some small job for the weekends, like a newspaper round.I said if I could rely on them to pay the bills, beside keeping up the performance at school plus walking the dog twice a day mornings and afternoons, then I would be happy to help with the grooming and do the evening walk plus I would help buying the first assessories like basket and lead and train the dog, since they had to go to school in the mornings.

I said as it would be a family dog they couldnt expect me to shoulder the whole responsibility, seeing that they were so old already. They hadn't expected that and were a bit kerflummuxed, but then agreed and said as they would get the puppy in October, they could find a job till then.I said no,they needed to start now, because I would take only a female, who needed to be speyed (is that the right word?) and that cost 300 €,so they needed to start saving right now, during the summer holidays, and I would help with the rest of the cost.I said it was only fair.
The faces fell and they said they would think about it again.

If they really agree to this and find a job,its well worth having a lovely dog into the bargain. If they don't,they don't want the dog enough and don't deserve to be given the responsibility.
What do you think?

I think they'll agree with it. Whether they'll stick to the agreement is another matter. The novelty of a pup or a dog can wear off very quickly when it's cold and wet outside and the dog needs to go out.

I'm speaking from my own experience here, Broc. I have no idea how committed your kids will be. I hope I'm not doing them a disservice. My own kids were quite happy to let 'dad' do all the dog care. Maybe that was my own fault.

Broc, the trouble is after a few weeks their enthusiasm may wane especially in the autum/winter months and then it's left to mum, reading between the lines of what you described it is possible, but you will know your kids better than anyone else.

We shall see.I can be pretty firm if needs must.;-)
I think if they are happy to take a job, they'll do the rest too,and I really don't mind going for a walk.
But for all that to happen, there must be the 'right' puppy in the litter as well!I'll try and send pics.

Apparently, I chose our first family dog when we went to the pet shop, and she was the only one that came forward in the cage to check us out.

"I'll have that one" I decreed!!

^ That's cute. I'm not a great lover of dogs but Scotties are impossible not to like.
