Some advice please - how old do you think a cat has to be before he's ready for the outside world unsupervised?

Jimmy is about 5 1/2 months and he wants out...

I don't know, Mongo, I've never had a cat that young. I'm sure someone will know.

I just asked some of the people on the kitten site and they suggest that about the age he is should be fine as long as he's vaccinated and neutered and preferably chipped. A few supervised excursions at first might be a good idea, but watch out if you have any busy roads nearby.

I hope that helps :)

He's had many supervised excursions both on harness and more recently unfettered - today he escaped our back garden and started roaming the neighbours and we had a devil of a time getting him back in. he's chipped, neutered, vaccinated.

What's the traffic like around there?

He knows his way around and should be able to find his way back. Chances are he won't be out for long. But I can understand how you feel.

Well it's London you know, so though I live in a residential side street there's a pretty busy road not that far away.

I heard somewhere that roads that are really busy are often safer for cats than roads that are only busy sometimes. Cats will avoid crossing the really busy roads, but get overconfident if a road is quiet a lot of the time.

Like the road by me. Some times it's really busy and the cemetery across the road is a very attractive place for cats to hang out. I know my neighbour has lost some cats to that road. Another friend of mine had nice quiet back lanes with allotments. The cats were so safe there, they didn't want to go any further.

I don't know the answer, Mongo. Sorry.

What's next, Troll the movie?

Besides. Nyan cat would have been a better choice.

Well here its a whole different arguement. Letting cats run free unsupervised at night is frowned upon even in the city; traffic or no traffic, because even in the city we have wildlife that never evolved to combat cats... birds lizards possums etc. In the suburbs we get koalas too and I always remember a cat ripping a baby koala up in our yard once. Even the hose turned on it didnt stop it.

Lost all our blue tongue lizards to that cat too. Neighbour's cat not mine.

My daughter has an inside cat in her apartment in the city. . Busy roads but she has got out at every place she has lived. So Truly spends time if she moves taking her for walks all around for blocks in a harness so if she does escape then she is familiar with the area to know how to get back. And chipped. Always chipped. I guess its all you can do.

And sit up and worry all night until they are safely back home again. ... no wait... thats the kids....

Tell you what.. wish I could chip the.kids!
Just keep swimming... just keep swimming.. just keep swimming....
