The Third Person Thread - Part the first

[Toothy]

Toothy tells Jules that English degrees are awarded (in descending order of level) as a 1st, a 2:1 (upper second), a 2:2 (lower second) or a 3rd. 1sts are comparatively rare, so to get a 2:1 is a very good achievement. In Toothy's year, there were 170 students of whom only one got a 1st (not Toothy!) and they spent all day, every day in lectures, tutorials or the library. Toothy preferred to enjoy the rest of university life, too.

Jules is now a bit better educated. She also noticed that Toothy did mention enjoying uni life, but not her degree.
Knowing how clever our Tooths is, Jules suspects it was very good anyway and therefore doesn't want to know. Her own degree was .... *%&++*?%&$ .... Blimey, there must be something wrong with the connection! Well, let's just say Jules did enjoy uni life very much and she had to work to earn some money, too.

Toothy enjoyed her degree well enough, 'twas Law as was her follow up vocational course, but she can't help wondering whether she shouldn't have studied languages and English Lit as she originally thought she would. Her eventual choice of subject is a long story which she won't bore the boardies with. Suffice it to say she can't always walk away from a challenge.

Aunty adds her belated congratulations for Mac Fantastically well done!

Aunty lived up to her nickname when doing her degree by being a bit vague about the number of subjects she had completed and ended up short by one when she first applied to graduate She did go back to finish the extra subject and went on to do a post-graduate, which she only remembered to graduate from thirteen years later when the document was needed for her job

So now everyone here is entrusted with reminding her to fill out the paperwork (if) and when she completes her current studies

[Will of Lancre]

Will has been sitting in the office all day while it was pouring with rain. Now the sun has come out and Will is still sitting in the office. Will doesn't think it's fair.

[Toothy]

Toothy tells Will, he's right. The weather isn't fair, it's wet. Ahem.

Toothy's hair is full of glitter as she's just got back from the theatre where she was singing in a show. She suspects that, even though she will be showering, it remains a strong possibility that she will turn up at work tomorrow still sparkling in the light.

Tony hopes that Toothy's performance went well.

It did, thank you, Tony. From Sunday to today, Toothy had been suffering from a lost voice and had to try hard not to talk too much. Those who have met Toothy will know that that was pretty impossible! However, someone up there clearly listened to Toothy's pleas and her voice behaved on the key songs where it needed to stand out. It would have been a bit tricky to have to mime, particularly as one song requires her to stand on her own in front of a mike at the front of the stage so it would be pretty obvious no sound was being made!

Will congratulates Toothy on a sparkling performance.

Will knows where Toothy is coming from on loss of voice. Will's work choir is performing Bohemian Rhapsody on Tuesday with a rock band - fortunately it is the last number in the concert, as it is impossible to sing against a rock band without shouting yourself hoarse.

Will is looking anxiously at the weather. On Sunday it is the English Church Fair in Luxembourg and Mrs Will is head honcho at the bookstall.

Fortunately the book stall now has a shiny new tent, with continuous roof and sides, to shelter the books, so they won't get drenched. In past years we had to make do with a row of small square pavillion tents (not sure if this is the right word for them in English ) tied together with string, which let in the rain at the joins.

Bonnie runs in to say she "hi" to all and "yay!" to Toof's successful performance. She also hopes all goes well with Mrs. Will's book sale. Bonnie has been a bit busier in RL the last few days. Well, today hasn't been exactly "busy" doing something. Actually it's been "busy" not doing much as the weather will almost hit triple digits at the peak. Instead she has been "busy" holding down a lounge chair at FriendS's pool with occasional "cool off periods" in the water. Currently she is taking a break for lunch before heading back out with an iced tea and a novel. She leaves coconut scented hugs for everyboardie!

Will thanks Bonnie for her good wishes. Will, Mrs Will and a couple of young lads (grandsons of English friends from the next village) put up the tent yesterday, and installed the books. Last year, the tent was put up in the dry and it kept books, booksellers and punters bone dry while the rain lashed down outside. This year it was raining (and approaching 100% humidity) when the tent went up, meaning that the inside of the tent is covered in condensation. However, the forecast for today is excellent.

Will tries hard not to admit he is jealous of Bonnie sunbathing in Californian weather. OK, Will is jealous.

Aunty shares Will's jealousy of Bonnie's weather! She also hopes that Will and co. got the luxury model market stand up and down ok...as Aunty thinks it looks complicated!

Life in Aunty's neck of the woods has been a little toooo interesting lately. She has started two new jobs. One gives her a bit of experience working in libraries (yay!) amongst other bits and bobs. The other job is helping a project worker with collating statistics and creating graphs and tables. Autny thought it was the funniest thing the other day when the project worker said she likes Aunty working for her as Aunty has such great attention to detail . It just shows that being terrified of stuffing up something important helps Aunty to focus

Aunty's area has also had buckets of rain. So much rain that caused one of the local rivers to burst its banks and fill up a local coal mine. Coal mine one day, reservoir the next. To top it off nature also threw in an earthquake. Not a big one on the world scale, but Aunty is not used to feeling like a freight train is going through the house while things fall off shelves around her.

Aunty hopes the next couple of weeks provide her with slightly less interesting times.

Will thanks Aunty and says yes, the bookstall went really well.

What also went well was the wedding yesterday of Will's no. 1 son in London.

Will is a bit busy trying to post his pics on FB, but can reveal that the high point of the reception was some of the couple's theatrical friends putting on the play-within-a-play from A Midsummer Night's Dream. No.1 son and his new wife were seated as the audience, playing the parts of Theseus and Hippolyta. Walk-on parts were played by the bride's brother (as Wall), sister (as Moon) and the groom's cousin (as Lion). Many laughs were had by all.

[Docandie]

Docandie hasn't been doing much that is near as interesting as Toothy, Aunty and Will.
She has been posting on Facebook, mostly stuff that is inconsequential to most of the world.

Docandie has finally bitten the bullet and ordered an iPad as she thinks it will be easier to tote it around and take on trips than her older and weighty 17" MacBookPro in its even heavier secure case. She has resisted the lure of the little "tablet" up to now because she always likes to see the "bugs" worked out of new technology before jumping in.

One of Docandie's old friends has been having problems from Tropical storm Debbie in a small town in Florida where she has been visiting her son and DiL. She was supposed to fly home tomorrow morning but the roads in the area are closed. She managed to get through on her cell phone and asked Docandie to check on he home.
Docandie is quite happy living here in "earthquake country" with an occasional quake every few years. There is no way she would live in a place where hurricanes roll in every year or even several times a year, often accompanied by tornadoes.
Her friend said they spent several hours inside a "safe" room because tornado warnings kept sounding.
Her son has already rebuilt his house twice following hurricane damage during the past decade. That would be too much for Docandie.
