I've read just about all of Kathy Reich's books. They really are very good and well worth checking out (though a bit gruesome in places). I understand the TV is not based of the books at all. Temperance Brennan is based on Kathy Reichs, who really is a forensic anthropologist. She knows what she's talking about.

After reading your bio, chili, I've come to the conclusion that VW camper vans look really cheerful.

Loooooove it! And what Tony says is true, the series is not based on the books but on the author (so Temperence Brennan is a best-selling novelist in the series). What I like most about it is her character. She's an analphabete when it comes to social behaviour, but she's really good in what she's doing, professionnally. But since she spends 99% of her time in her lab and with long-dead people, she has basically no idea of the outside world, and up-to-date stuff, which is always a source of humour... For example, her partner was talking about how much he liked Led Zeppelin, and she never even heard of it... "My publisher offered me tickets, but when I heard Zeppelin I thought it was for some sort of air show."
