Unseen Academicals

Postby poohbcarrot » Sat Jan 24, 2009 5:26 am

Unseen Academicals is the title of a forthcoming book about Ridcully making a football team.

Here is my Discworld best XI. Playing 4-3-3. Speedy wingers, big centre forward, aggression and guile in midfield, stoppable defence and a safe pair of hands in goal.

..................................The Librarian

Ponder Stibbons ......Vimes ......Detritus...... Rob Anybody

Angua ..........................Ridcully.............. Susan Sto Helit

Rincewind .....................Carrot ...................The Luggage

 The thought of trying to tackle the Luggage is too scarey!

Poohcarrot, are you absolutely sure you want Rincewind out there on the field?? How about putting him to good use...oh I don't know, mixing the sports drinks for half-time maybe? :D

Rincewind is a good runner, he's fast and if he tries to do anything stupid, Angua will bite him.

Good point, (just hope he has washed within the last week).
Well, as long as Dorfl is the subsitute keeper all is good. Just tell him to write "catch all balls" on the paper in his head, and noone will ever score a goal against him...

I know nothing about football, but I can see having The Luggage in the team could be very tricky. He'd get an awful lot of red cards as he ate the opposing players.

I wonder what happens when the Luggage eats people? Death never seems to turn up for them.

Do they die - or do they go somewhere else? :?

Well, I take that they don´t necessarily die immediately when eaten by Luggage, so Death´s presence can wait...they may starve to death, die from suffocation...

Or Death DOES turn up for them, but Terry doesn´t write about it

And for your squadra azzura - where is Pteppic? now THAT would be excellent defence player!

maybe it's like the TARDIS and they re-appear somewhere else in a different time?

Although it does have a tongue.... and it does lick it's lid...

People have got out of The Luggage alive. Didn't Rincewind & that girl who's name escapes me, hide in it in one book? Think it was The Last Continent?

Oh yes, people get in there and hide. Presumably the Luggage will allow people it likes to do that, but that's different to when it actually attacks people and swallows them. :D

Lots of people die in Discworld and death doesn't appear in the text, but as he is everywhere at the same time, it's reasonable to assume he is there. Look at how many people died in Jingo, or Interesting Times.

Actually, I want to drop Ponder Stibbons, move Vimes to left back, bring in Dorfl (good call WannabeAngua) to partner Detritus in the middle of the defence and have Death as the trainer who runs on with the magic sponge (or scythe - depending on the seriousness of the injury) and who provides the players with those bikkies with the chocky bits in at half time, or mint cracknels (or is that a different thread?). :P

Teppic can be the sub.
