Just to be clear - when I referred earlier to 'the War' I meant WW2, and I was referring to Pusha's original story at the start of the thread, not the later Jingo reference

Thanks Colin. That's the great thing, and what I was referring to. You can pick up all sorts of events throught history from a book like Jingo and they will mean different things to different people.

It's the same with, for example, Jonathon Swift and Gulliver's Travels. It was written as a satire of the times he lived in, but it's still works today.

2 points to add to the thread

1 - bins were taken away from all public places in the IRA era and thats where the drop it culture came from - there was no where to put rubbish - saw this on a documentary

2 the madness has definitely set in

- on a bag of charcoal - with a pic of a BBQ on the front - when the small print says food not included - this is only there because some (put offensive word here) has actually complained to the company about the lack of the advertised food

there are so many cases of this in manuals e.g. Iron - do not use in the bathroom etc

When I was a kid growing up in the late fifties and sixties, there were no public bins. Or if there were they were few and far between. If you had litter you kept it on you until you either found a bin or you got home.

A few years ago I went on a holiday to Slovenia and public bins are non existant there - and yet you never see litter anywhere.

As to the 'need' for stupid instructions - it's largely (I feel) down to the compensation culture that we now have. There really should be no need for most of them.

lol - I remember hearing about a woman who thought she could use a microwave to dry her dog and successfully sued the manufacturer because it had no warning sign. I thought it was just urban myth at first, but then I thought "No, actually that sounds about right."
