I don't believe in giving things up for lent, or being nice to people at Xmas. Why can't people give things up whenever they want, and be nice to people all the time? :?

Ver-ry good point. That's practically what I hope athiesm can achieve - people being nice to each other because they want to, not because their religion says so.

Morty, If you did invite all your friends to a party and ended up with two parties, one in the lounge and one in the kitchen, then i would definatly be outside the back door. :D

Who says they can't? :D

But I do agree with you. It always seems a bit hypocritical that people make a special effort to be nice at Christmas time.

Like the places that open to feed the homeless and give them shelter for the night over the Christmas holidays. Where are they the rest of the winter? :?

Well said Tony and considering the weather here today, very thought provoking.

And thank you Morty for the insight and the suggestion. Think my other half could be interested in the "Drinking 10 pints instead of 5" idea.

Lent is a tradition of some churches of giving something up during the forty days between Shrove Tuesday and Palm Sunday, because of Jesus fasting in the desert for 40 days. Originally people used to fast so they made pancakes on Shrove Tuesday to use up the last of the food such as milk or eggs, because it wouldn't last.

How come so many people love pancakes, yet they only seem to eat them at the start of Lent?

Unless you're French - then you can have a crepe whenever you feel like one.
