Pliny the Elder - what was he smoking?

Postby Tonyblack » Tue Feb 02, 2010 10:54 pm

There's a question that crops up now and again on the Daily Quiz that I take part in on another site about Pliny the Elder's cure for headaches (wrap a bra around the head). I was curious to see if the great man had any other amazing insights of wisdom and found THIS SITE.

I didn't get that far but -
translation from Pliny the Elder wrote:Earth taken out of a skull acts, it is said, as a depilatory for the eye-lashes...

really reassures me that the man was completely bonkers

They really love him on QI though

Wiki wrote:Gaius Plinius Secundus (23 CE – August 25, 79), better known as Pliny the Elder, was an author, naturalist, and natural philosopher as well as naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire and personal friend of the emperor Vespasian. Spending most of his spare time studying, writing or investigating natural and geographic phenomena in the field, he wrote an encyclopedic work, Naturalis Historia, which became a model for all such works written subsequently.

He died during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius
