My Discworld Models (4 so far)

Postby lynall » Sun Dec 13, 2009 1:30 pm

Hi Everyone,

So i have been making some DW models out of silver to help me get into university next year. So far i have made 4 and i am working on my 5th.

Please have a look at the finished pieces and tell me what you think (and criticism is welcome :) )

I am going to make a document for each one to show how they are made because i took pics of each process. I'll post them up when i am done.

--------------------------------

I have made:

A sign post for the Discworld

Moist Von Lipwigs Top from Making money

Rincewinds 'Wizzards' hat

The Death of Rats Scythe

Image

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Discworld sign

The piece is made to look like a rickety wooden sign post pointing to XXXX / Quirm / Ankh-Morpork / Deaths House.

I thought This would be a nice touch putting the sign to deaths house on the bottom of the piece.

Moist Von Lipwig's Top Hat

This is my take on Moists hat from Making Money. I didn't take any pics of this process because it was only a quicky..... and yes i know it looks like the monopoly hat

It is Gilded yellow btw its not actually gold!

Rincewinds Hat

This Piece is my take on the old tatty hat.

The Death Of Rats Scythe

I don't think this little guy gets the respect he deserves so i thought i make a scythe for him. Thanks Danny B for convincing me to use 'SQUEAK!' :)

Pretty damn good! :D

Has someone sat on the scythe? It's leaning a bit more than it was before

What's that plastic pyramid-type-prism-y-thing in the background with the dice in it?

I'm going to need a swat team, ready to mobilize, street maps covering the whole of florida, a pot of coffee, 12 jammy dodgers and A FEZ.

Those are all very good lynall and the best one for me is the signpost which I have to admit I thought didn't look all that great in it's early stages. :) Absolutely first class the texture you've put on there for the wood - if it wasn't silver I'd think it was wood!

Moist's hat is also impressive - not at all like the monopoly hat really (that's not as tall and the curves are cruder than yours  ). Rincewind's hat is brilliant but I think most people will regrettably think it's the Sorting Hat from Those Other Books

The Death of Rat's scythe - the blade's looking v.good, nice and sharp! I still think the pole's a little too bendy but of course rat-skellingtons are built differently to anthropomorphic ones aren't they? (establish your justifications well in advance for your art course interview panel )

Really, really well done - I'm sure they'll be well impressed :D

Thanks to everyone :) i'm glad you like them.

Poohcarrot - i wanted to make the scythe lean back because i thought it would look quirky and the idea was the cheese keeps it in place.

I did spell it Wizzard too haha, and that thing in the background is a paper weight.

----------------------------

Sjoerd300 - Thanks a lot! :)

-----------------------------

Bikkit - I don't want to make the luggage.... well i do but it is too hard! the amount of detail on it is mind numbing! The main thing thats putting me off is those feet

-------------------

TonyBlack - Thanks a bunch :) and by the way what is your avatar picture? ( i still need to pm that jeweller actually!)

--------------------

Jan Van Quirm - My favorite is the sign as well. I was going to leave it plain but i thought the wood look finished it perfectly. I'm glad you like it :)

I'm glad you don't think moists hat looks like the monopoly hat haha i showed my mum (granted she hasn't read the books yet) and she obviously thought it was....

I've only had one person say its the sorting hat actually too! i bet other people think it before i tell them what its supposed to be.

Thanks for the honesty with the scythe, Its design wasn't thought up i did it on the fly and i figure this shape would be discworld-esq haha. I like the way it leans back strangely even though some people i've shown don't

---------------

Betty and Who's Wee Dug - Thanks guys it means a lot :)

Thanks everyone again! :)

most people will regrettably think it's the Sorting Hat from Those Other Books

Bah. The onslaught of ignorant commercialism continues. I kind of went off Those Other Books after the fifth book and it all got rather depressing, with all my favourite characters dying and everything, not to mention the number of sad, stupid people that were introduced to Those Other Books via the movie ('Wait, this is from a book?',etc).

Sorry about that short rant. Anyway, these are all excellent pieces of craft. Great work! :)

It's Lord Downey head of the Assassins' Guild as portrayed by Paul Kidby.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!

I love the holes in Rincewinds hat where crossbow bolts, arrows, poison darts have left their mark!! You are a genius, which is proven by NOT attempting The Luggage. I cannot even imagine doing what you can do. Congrats on a job well done.
