Ideas for discworld models.

Postby lynall » Sat Nov 28, 2009 9:51 pm

Hi everyone, i'm new here and i need a bit of help. I'm a jeweller from Birmingham and i'm going to university next year, I'm 23 so i cannot get in on grades alone so i am in the middle of making a few things to show my willingness and my skill i jewellery and model making... or lack of haha.

I am a big fan of the Discworld (although i still haven't finished it yet) so i decided to make a few things from it out of silver to help me get in.

So far i have had a go at making Rincewinds hat, a signpost pointing to cities on the disc, and the death of rats scythe with a removable base via a piece of Swiss cheese.

After i finish the sign post and scythe i won't know what to do so i was wondering if anyone could give me a couple of ideas?

Heres a couple of pics of the hat and sign post. ( i do have more but i don't want to make a huuuge post)

Rincewinds Hat

(i know i missed out the star on his hat, so i put it around the side....)

Sorry about the big 1st post. I had a ankle operation a few days ago and i can't get to the workshop to carry on with these so im trying to think of the next things i can do and get designing them.

Oh and i don't want to do the luggage haha! Those feet would kill me! :!:

Hi Sjoerd ,

I thought of him / her but as i make everything by hand it would be too hard. Theres too much detail for a small model really. I suppose i could try and make it a bit bigger but that would be a lot of silver haha.

Thanks anyway though! :D

oh i was also wondering, for the death of rats scythe model im making i want a message to be concealed under a the smaller base but i can't think of anything. Does anyone on here know and good short death qoutes i can engrave on it?

..... i thought of " SQUEAK " but that seems a lil' to boring.

Hi, lynall. Welcome to the site.:)

The hat looks awesome!

Could I just say that to at least this Discworld fan, seeing anything except "SQUEAK" engraved on anything to do with the Death of Rats, would seem somehow wrong...;)

 Xeno & Ibid testing turtles for their speed
 The luggage
 The skull ring for professors of the Department of Post-Mortem Communications
 Detrius
 Moist Von Lipvig (in silver & gold)
 a dragon (swamp, lunar, or noble)
 The Hogfather
 Dorfl (or other golum); you could have a space in it's head for incense to burn, making its eyes glow

wow! thanks for all the replies guys!

Danny and Tony thanks for the comment about the hat. I hope the university like it too haha. + Danny thanks for the squeak comment.

Kakaze thanks for all those ideas!, i am not to good at people though :( ... well to be honest i have only ever made these 3 models, i just made rings and bracelets etc before and i think trying 'Moist Von Lipvig' for example would be to hard for me. (i'm actually listening to Going postal atm too :)

+ Whos wee dug. I'll save that qoute for a model i do of something to do with death. That is perfect for him thanks! :D I need a something that any discworld fan who looks at it would go 'aahhh thats .....' have you got any ideas. I was thinking maybe a hourglass or something. hhmmm

Hi Lynall,

I’m sorry I’d missed this thread until this morning. The hat is a wonderful piece of work, so much detail on such a small item. I’ve just looked at all the work in progress photos and to see it come to life bit by bit was an education 8)

How many hours did it take to complete?

Good luck and let us know how you go on when you start at university

Hope the ankle gets better soon

Wow! That looks great, lynall, really!

You have been given many different ideas, but what do you think about Magrat's staff touching a pumpkin? I think every discworld fan will recognise it.

Good luck with the models!

Hi Mortimer & Tristan,

eerrmmm his hat took about 10 hours to complete because it was the first time i had dont anything like it and i wanted to document it all for uni. I think it would only tale about 5 hours now i know what to do..... and if i don't use 2 different quality silvers... that caused me so much aggro!

The sign post is by far my fav' & so far and so far its only taken about 4 hours, i think it will take another 2 to finish.

The scythe is by far my quickest as i designed it and made the scythe part and smaller base in just over 3 hours and in 1 sitting.

Here is a couple of pics of the scythe so far. ( the dot is where the cheese will go )

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e67/l ... NY0097.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e67/l ... 0098-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e67/l ... 0099-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e67/l ... 0100-1.jpg

It does lean back so it needs the cheese to keep it up.

I haven't done any of the witches series yet but i love the idea of her staff touching a pumpkin Tristan!! is there any way you could get me a picture? i have had a look on google but i've had no luck :(. I think i will do that next as the pumpkin can be the base and the staff will stand on it at a angle.

My ankles ok too i can kinda shuffle around so i might get into the shop this week :)

Hi Lynall,

10 hours
I was expecting you say far longer than that. I'm amazed :o

The detail on the Scythe is stunning but I still love that hat.
Pleased to hear the ankle is on the mend.

Don't forget to post pictures of all the completed items.

Lynall, you might find this link interesting. :) It's for Barrie who is a member here and has been making Discworld jewellery for many years now (search "discworld"). He made Terry's Death's Head rings for him. :D
